What in the World is That?
28 Apr 2004

What in the World is That? Is this a deer with broken horns? Perhaps a new design for an Easter bonnet? Maybe its just hanging laundry out to dry. Actually its an eight point buck that was involved in a automobile collision. The damage, however, was not to his head but to its rear leg which unfortunately had to be amputated. The surgery was performed by the veterinarians at the Long Island Vet Specialists in Farmingdale. Once he had recovered, he was not very cooperative . The aggressive animal would charge the volunteers when they came into the cage to feed him. Those sharp points can hurt when he means business. The nastiness increased as the recovery progressed. Soon most of the volunteers were afraid to go into the cage. Someone came up with the idea to tape towels around his horns to take a little of the bite out of his charges. It was an idea whose time had come. The padding worked just great. Soon after the padding episode, the buck's horns dropped off naturally. Once he was naturally disarmed, he calmed right down. It was almost like he knew that all his guns were unloaded. He soon made friends with another little deer that was recovering in the same cage. We now have to wait until all the fur removed in preparation for surgery grows back. This has been a long, slow process. Fortunately, he has made good progress and soon will be released. This animal is very tenacious and will not let the loss of a leg slow him down at all.
