Wildlife Rehabilitation is the process of rescuing, raising and arranging for veterinary care of orphaned, sick, displaced or injured wild animals with a goal of releasing them back to their natural habitats. For rehabilitation to be deemed successful, these released animals must be able to truly function as wild animals. This includes being able to recognize and obtain the proper foods, select mates of their own species and reproduce and show appropriate fear of potential dangers such as people, cars, dogs, etc. In virtually all areas of the United States, a special license is required to legally rehabilitate wildlife. In addition, federal licenses are also required to handle wild migratory birds. Rehabilitators must do more than simply care for the need of individual animals. They must provide a major function by educating the public about wildlife problems and issues, dispelling much fear and misinformation people have about wildlife.
